What Is Long Combination Vehicle Training?
A long combination vehicle — commonly called an LCV or super link — is a truck configuration made up of a rigid horse and two or more trailers. These combinations can stretch beyond 22 metres and carry payloads that standard semi-trucks simply can’t match. That’s why they’re the backbone of bulk logistics in South Africa, hauling everything from steel coil and sugar to retail stock and cold chain freight.
The thing is, holding a Code 14 licence gets you into the cab of a standard articulated truck. It doesn't automatically prepare you for the additional skill set that super links and long combination vehicles demand. The steering dynamics are different. Reversing requires a different technique entirely. Managing the rear trailer under braking on the N3 descent, reading gaps in traffic with an extra 10 metres of vehicle behind you — these are learned skills, and they're skills that employers specifically look for.
LCV training bridges that gap. At Abethu Skills, the course gives you structured, supervised time on a long combination vehicle so that by the time you complete your certification, you've actually operated the machine under realistic conditions. That's what makes the certificate worth something to a potential employer.
LCV Course Options at Abethu Skills Training
Super Link Vehicle Training (Core LCV Programme)
The primary long combination vehicle course at Abethu Skills runs over two weeks and covers the full scope of super link operation. This is the course most candidates need when moving from standard articulated truck driving into LCV work. The two-week programme is structured to build your competency progressively. You start with vehicle familiarisation — understanding the coupling mechanism between the two trailers, pre-trip inspection procedures, and the additional safety checks that apply to tandem trailer configurations. From there, you move into controlled manoeuvring practice before progressing to road work. This course suits drivers who already hold their Code 14 and want to add LCV operation to their verified skill set. It also works well for drivers who have informal experience on super links but need a formal, accredited certification that will stand up to scrutiny during a job application.
Refresher and Renewal Training
If you've held LCV certification before and it's lapsed, or if your employer requires periodic retraining as part of their RTMS (Road Transport Management System) compliance, the renewal course gets you current without putting you through the full two-week programme. Renewal is available at a reduced cost — speak to our team about your specific situation and we'll confirm what's required.
Code 14 to LCV Pathway
Don't yet have your Code 14? Abethu Skills offers Code 14 licence training including learners preparation and driving, with a guaranteed pass programme. Once you've completed that, the LCV course is your natural next step. Our team can advise you on sequencing your training for the fastest route to full LCV certification.
Why KZN Drivers Choose Abethu Skills for LCV Certification
Over a Decade of Hands-On Training
Abethu Skills Training has been operating for more than ten years out of Durban's Urban View. That's ten years of watching what works in the classroom, understanding what employers actually test for during assessments, and refining how we teach vehicle handling so candidates leave genuinely ready — not just certificate-ready.
Instructors Who've Operated What They Teach
Your training isn't delivered by someone who learned LCV operation from a manual. Our instructors have real-world driving backgrounds and understand the specific challenges of KwaZulu-Natal's road environment. The gradients on routes out of Durban, the congestion at the port precinct, the behaviour of heavily loaded combinations on the N3 — these aren't theoretical concerns for our trainers.
Structured for Working Adults
The two-week format is designed with employed drivers in mind. We understand that taking time out of work to retrain is a real cost, which is why the course is structured to move efficiently through the material without cutting corners on practical time. You're not sitting through three hours of theory when you could be behind the wheel.
Accredited Certification.
The certificates issued on completion are recognised by employers across KZN and nationally. When you submit your documentation for a long haul freight or logistics position, the name Abethu Skills is known quantity in this province.
Clear, Upfront Fees
There are no surprise add-ons halfway through the course. The course fee is stated at the outset, and it covers your training, materials, and certification. What you're quoted is what you pay.
How the Long Combination Vehicle Training Process Works
Enquire and Confirm Eligibility
Contact us by phone, WhatsApp, or email to discuss your situation. We'll confirm that you hold a valid Code 14 licence (this is a prerequisite for the LCV course) and talk through available start dates. This typically takes one conversation. We'll also sort out the fee payment process and confirm what documentation you need to bring on day one.
Induction and Vehicle Familiarisation (Days 1–2)
Your first two days cover the theoretical and regulatory foundation. You'll go through the vehicle inspection process specific to long combinations, understand coupling procedures, load distribution principles, and the legal framework governing LCV operation in South Africa. You'll also complete your first hands-on time in and around the vehicle before any road driving.
Controlled Manoeuvring Practice (Days 3–5)
The next phase is off-road manoeuvring — reversing with tandem trailers, jackknife awareness and correction, lane positioning, and tight turns. This is where most candidates spend the most productive training hours, because these are the skills that take repetition to embed properly. Our yard is set up to give you the space to make mistakes before they happen on a public road.
On-Road Driving (Days 6–9)
By the second week, you're operating on public roads under instructor supervision. Routes are chosen to cover the conditions KZN logistics drivers actually face — gradients, urban congestion, highway merging, stopping distances with a loaded combination. Your instructor is with you throughout, providing feedback in real time.
Assessment and Certification (Day 10)
The final day covers your formal assessment. Candidates who demonstrate the required competency receive their accredited LCV certificate. Those who need a little more time are assessed on their specific gaps — we're not in the business of failing people without reason. If additional time is needed, we discuss that honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions About LCV Training
Do I need a Code 14 licence before I can enrol for LCV training?
Yes. A valid Code 14 (EC) licence is a prerequisite for the long combination vehicle course. If you don’t yet have your Code 14, Abethu Skills offers Code 14 training with a guaranteed pass, which you’d complete before starting the LCV programme. Speak to us about sequencing your training — we can map out a clear pathway from where you are now.
How long does the LCV course take?
The standard long combination vehicle training course runs for two weeks (10 working days). This covers theory, controlled manoeuvring practice, supervised on-road driving, and your final assessment. The two-week structure is designed to be thorough without being unnecessarily extended.
What does the R9,000 course fee include?
The fee covers all your practical training time on the vehicle, theory materials, instructor time for the full course duration, your assessment, and your accredited certificate on completion. There are no additional costs added after you’ve enrolled.
Is the certification recognised by employers?
Yes. The LCV certificate issued by Abethu Skills Training is accredited and recognised across the logistics, freight, and transport sectors in KwaZulu-Natal and nationally. Employers in sectors like road freight, bulk transport, and retail logistics specifically look for candidates with verified LCV certification.
What's the difference between a super link and a standard articulated truck?
A standard articulated truck (code 14 vehicle) uses a single semi-trailer. A super link or long combination vehicle uses two trailers — a dolly connects the rear trailer to the first. This creates a longer overall vehicle, increases payload capacity significantly, but also changes the dynamics of steering, braking, and reversing. The LCV course specifically trains you on these differences.
Do you train company drivers, or only individuals?
Both. Individual drivers who are self-funding their certification and fleet operators who need to put multiple drivers through LCV training are both welcome. For companies with larger training needs, contact us to discuss volume and scheduling options.
What happens if I don't pass the assessment on the last day?
We’ll give you honest feedback on what needs further work and discuss the options available, including additional supervised time before reassessment. We don’t pass candidates who aren’t ready — but we also don’t fail candidates without giving them a fair opportunity to address specific gaps.
Where are you based and is parking available?
We’re at 113 Albert Street, 211 Urban View, Durban. Parking is available at the training centre. Candidates from outside Durban can speak to us about nearby accommodation options in the area.
