Lifting & Heavy Machinery

Mobile Crane Training in Durban | 5-Day TETA Course

Heavy lifting equipment isn't something you figure out as you go. One wrong call and someone gets hurt — or worse. Employers know this, which is why they ask for a TETA-accredited certificate before they put you in the cab. That's what we give you at Abethu Skills.

The course runs 5 days. You'll cover theory in the morning and get onto the equipment in the afternoon — pre-operational checks, load management, signal communication, emergency procedures. By the time you sit your assessment, it's not new to you.

New to cranes or just need the paper to go with the experience you already have — either way, we'll get you sorted.

What the Mobile Crane Training Includes

There’s a difference between a training centre that hands you a certificate and one that actually produces a competent operator. At Abethu, the course is built around the TETA unit standard — so what you’re assessed on is what you’ve actually been trained to do, not a surprise on the day.

Here's what we offer:

Core Mobile Crane Operator Course (Novice)

This is the full course — 5 days, theory and practical combined, with a formal assessment at the end. It's aimed at people who haven't held a mobile crane licence before, or operators who've crossed over from a different machine type and need the qualification to match.

The qualification sits on SAQA Unit Standard 116254, NQF Level 2 — 20 credits, registered through TETA. That matters because it's the standard construction companies, logistics firms and compliance auditors check for. A certificate from an unaccredited provider doesn't carry the same weight, and most employers in this industry know it.

You need to be 18 or older, medically fit, and able to read and write at a basic level. South African ID or a valid passport is required. No matric, no prior qualifications — the course is open to anyone who meets those basics.

Mobile Crane Refresher & Licence Renewal

Crane operator licences in South Africa expire every two years. If yours has lapsed — or if you've been off the machines for a while — you can't legally go back to work without a refresher. That's not a Abethu rule, that's the regulation.

Our refresher gets you back to current — updated safety standards, a practical reassessment, and your licence renewed at R2,000. Shorter than the full course. Contact us to confirm dates and fit it around your schedule.

If your employer is holding off on putting you on site until your certification is current, this is the fastest way to fix that.

Corporate & Company Training (On-Site or at Our Facility)

Got five operators who all need certification before a project kicks off? Or a new intake of staff and a deadline to meet? We can work with your safety officer to put together group training that fits your timeline — at our facility in Durban or on your site.We travel. KZN, Gauteng, the rest of SA — it's doable. Group rates are available and frankly worth a call if you're looking at more than two or three operators.Companies in construction, logistics, ports, and warehousing use us regularly for this. The paper trail matters for audits, and we give you proper TETA-accredited records.

Related Crane Training Courses

We also run tower crane and overhead crane training, each with its own unit standard. If your operators need to be qualified across more than one machine type, ask us — it's something we can arrange.

Why Learners Come to Abethu for Mobile Crane Training

Over a Decade of Operator Training

We've been at this for over ten years. Thousands of operators — construction, logistics, mining support, ports — have come through our training and gone on to find work. You pick things up over that time. What actually helps students pass. What employers want to see. What the common gaps are. We build that into how we teach.

Hands-on from day one.

The practical assessment is 80% of your result. So that's where we put the time. You don't spend three days in a classroom and then rush through a quick practical at the end — you're on the equipment early, with your trainer right there, until the controls feel natural.

TETA-Accredited Certificates That Actually Count

The certificate you leave with is TETA-accredited — recognised by employers and compliance officers nationwide. There are training centres out there handing out attendance certificates that look official but won't hold up when an auditor or a safety officer checks them. Ours will.

Qualified, Experienced Facilitators

Our trainers have actually operated this equipment on real sites — not just studied it. That comes through in how they teach. They know the things that trip new operators up, the habits worth building early, and what a safety inspector will be looking for on the day you get assessed.

Free Job Assistance After Certification

Once you've passed, we help you use it. We offer free job placement support — CV help, and connecting you with employers in the industry who are looking for certified operators. It's not something every training centre does, and for a lot of our students it's made the difference.

Accommodation Available

Students come from Joburg, Cape Town, the Eastern Cape, Zimbabwe, Mozambique. If you're travelling to Durban for the course, we have basic accommodation on-site at R100 a night. Bring your own food — there are cooking facilities. It's not a hotel, but it keeps the cost down and means you don't have to sort out your own digs.

How to Enrol and What to Expect

Here’s the process from first call to certificate:

Contact Us & Confirm Your Start Date

Call or WhatsApp 031 309 4309 / 074 459 5134, or email info@abethutraining.co.za. We run intakes regularly, so there's usually not a long wait. One conversation is normally enough to lock in your start date.

Registration & Documents

Bring your ID or passport, your CV, and your PPE — safety boots, hard hat, gloves, reflective jacket. If you're doing a refresher, bring the old licence copy too. If you're coming from out of town, let us know and we'll sort accommodation at the same time.

Theory Component

Classroom first — crane types, load charts, pre-op checks, OHS Act requirements, signal communication, hazard recognition. The theory test is 20% of your final mark. It's not designed to catch you out. If you've paid attention during the sessions, you'll be fine.

Practical Training

Most of your time goes here. Real equipment, real lifts — load placement, emergency procedures, machine inspection. Your trainer is with you throughout. The practical is 80% of your assessment, and you'll have done it enough times by then that it's not nerve-wracking.

Formal Assessment

A registered TETA assessor conducts the final assessment — theory knowledge and practical performance, both measured against the unit standard. It's methodical, not harsh. If you've done the work during the course, the assessment is a formality.

Certification & Job Assistance

Pass your assessment and we issue your certificate of competency — TETA-accredited, nationally recognised. From there, we help with the CV and connect you to employers who are hiring. The whole course is 5 days.

Common Questions About the Course

Yes. The course is accredited through TETA — the relevant SETA for operator training of this kind. Assessors and moderators are all registered with the relevant quality assurance structures. The certificate is nationally recognised.

Five days for the novice course — theory and practical both included. Refresher and licence renewal is shorter, and costs R2,000. Contact us for current dates.

South African ID or valid passport. Previous certificate or licence copy if you’re doing a refresher. Your CV for our placement records. PPE is compulsory for the practical component — safety boots, hard hat, gloves, reflective jacket. Don’t arrive without it.

Our facility is in Durban, but we train students from all over the country. If you’re travelling, accommodation is available on-site. For companies that need training brought to them, we do on-site nationally — call us to work out the details.

We’ll arrange a reassessment and look at where the gaps are. Most students who don’t pass first time weren’t far off. Talk to your trainer before the assessment if there’s something you’re not confident about — they’re not going to judge you for asking.

We run intakes throughout the year, so you’re usually not waiting long. Call us and we’ll tell you what’s available. If you’re a company booking a group, give us a bit more lead time — the earlier you get in touch, the easier it is to schedule.

Minimum age 18. You need to be in good health. Basic literacy is required for the theory component — reading and writing at a functional level. No matric or formal qualifications. The course is accessible to a wide range of learners, and that’s intentional.

Plenty of places will give you a piece of paper. What we offer is over ten years of operator training, proper hands-on practical time, a legitimate TETA-accredited assessment, and job placement support once you’re done. Our students have ended up working construction projects, ports, and industrial facilities across South Africa. We care about what happens after you leave — not just on the day you collect your certificate.
