What Reach Stacker Training at Abethu Covers

A reach stacker is not a machine you can figure out on the job. These units handle loaded shipping containers weighing tens of tonnes, often in tight terminal environments where a single mistake causes serious damage or injury. Employers in container logistics, port operations, rail freight, and heavy warehousing need operators who understand what they’re doing before they ever sit in the cab — and that’s exactly what this course produces.

Theory and Safety Fundamentals

The course starts in the classroom with the basics: machine components, load capacity tables, pre-operational inspection procedures, and South African health and safety regulations. You'll learn how to identify faults before they become incidents and understand the legal obligations both you and your employer carry when operating heavy lifting equipment. This section typically takes the first few days of the two-week programme, and it's where a lot of candidates realise how much there is to know before the practical begins.

Practical Machine Operation

Once you're through the theory, training moves to the yard. Our training ground near the Durban harbour gives candidates hands-on time on an actual reach stacker — not a simulator, not a scaled-down model. You'll practise container lifts, stacking, repositioning, and travel across an operational-style yard under the guidance of qualified facilitators. By the end of week two, you should be confident picking up, moving, and placing containers accurately and safely.

Certificate Issuance

On successful completion, you receive a reach stacker operator certificate that meets national compliance standards. This is the document your employer will want to see on file and that will satisfy DoL inspection requirements on most South African worksites.

We also offer a combined reach stacker and container handler course for candidates who want broader certification — useful if you're working at a facility that operates both machine types.

Who Should Enrol for Reach Stacker Operator Training?

This course is for anyone above the age of 18 who is in good health and holds a valid South African ID, passport, or asylum document. A driver’s licence is not a requirement to enrol — though some employers in the logistics sector do prefer candidates who hold at least a Code 10, so it’s worth noting if you’re planning ahead for job applications.

First-time operators

First-time operators with no prior machine experience are welcome. The course is designed to take you from zero to certified without assuming any background knowledge.

Experienced operators seeking renewa

Experienced operators seeking renewal can use this course to refresh their certification and stay compliant. South African employers increasingly require up-to-date certificates, and many won't allow an operator on-site without a current document regardless of how long they've been doing the job.

Company employees

Company employees sent for group or on-site training also go through this programme. If you're an employer looking to certify a team, Abethu offers on-site training options — contact us directly to discuss logistics and group pricing.

And +

The course is open to male and female candidates, South African nationals and foreign nationals, and students from outside KZN who need accommodation during their stay in Durban.

Why Durban Operators Choose Abethu Skills Training

Over a decade of practical, no-nonsense training

Abethu has been operating since 2012, which means our facilitators have seen the full range of candidates — fast learners, nervous first-timers, experienced operators who've picked up bad habits, and everything in between. We adjust our approach based on who's in front of us. That's not something you get from a training provider that just runs students through a standard script.

TETA and CETA accredited.

Our training is registered with the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA) and the Construction Education and Training Authority (CETA). This matters because it means your certificate carries weight with employers who ask about accreditation — and most serious logistics operations in South Africa do.

Real machine time on real equipment.

Some training centres run candidates through basic yard drills without enough seat time. Our training ground near the Durban harbour gives you genuine hands-on hours. You'll be doing actual container lifts, not just watching demonstrations.

Training in your language

Our facilitators can conduct training in English, isiZulu, or isiXhosa. For candidates who aren't fully comfortable in English, this makes a significant difference to how much you absorb during the theory sessions.

Free job placement assistance.

Once you've completed your certificate, Abethu provides job assistance at no additional cost. We've connected thousands of graduates with opportunities across South Africa's logistics, port, and construction sectors. We don't just certify you and send you on your way.

Accommodation available.

If you're travelling to Durban specifically for this course, we can arrange accommodation at an additional cost. Students coming from outside KZN often make use of this option.

How the Reach Stacker Course Works — Step by Step

Registration & Booking

ontact Abethu by phone, WhatsApp, or walk into our Durban office at 113 Albert Street, Urban View. You'll confirm the next available course date and what documents you need to bring. Registration is done in person at the Durban or Johannesburg office. This takes one visit, usually less than an hour.

What you need: Valid ID / passport / asylum document. No previous certificates required.

Classroom Theory (Days 1–3 approximately)

Your first few days cover machine theory, load charts, pre-start inspection, safety regulations, and South African OHS compliance relevant to reach stacker operation. Our facilitators keep sessions practical and to the point — you're learning what you need to operate safely, not sitting through hours of irrelevant content.

Timeline: 2–3 days, depending on class pace and questions.

Practical Yard Training (Days 4–10 approximately)

You move to the training yard near the Durban harbour for hands-on machine time. Facilitators supervise and correct technique as you practise lifts, stacking, travel, and container placement. Candidates who need more time on specific skills get the attention they need — we're not in a rush to move you through if you're not ready.

Timeline: Approximately 7 days of practical work across the two-week period.

Assessment

At the end of the course you'll complete a practical and written assessment. This confirms that you've met the competency standards required for certification. Most candidates who've attended consistently and engaged with the material pass without difficulty.

Timeline: Final 1–2 days of the two-week programme.

Certification

On successful completion, your reach stacker operator certificate is issued. You leave with documentation that meets national standards and satisfies employer compliance requirements across South Africa's logistics and container handling sectors.

Timeline: Certificate issued at or shortly after course completion.
