Basic Boilermaker Course in Durban – Get Trade-Ready in 4 Weeks
If you’ve been looking for a way into the metalworking and fabrication industry, this is it. Abethu Skills Training offers a practical, hands-on boilermaker course in Durban designed to give you the foundational skills that employers in construction, manufacturing, and engineering actually look for.
The course runs over 4 weeks and is delivered from our Durban training centre by experienced industry professionals. Whether you’re starting fresh or want to formalise skills you already have, you’ll leave with a certificate that proves you’re work-ready.
What the Basic Boilermaker Course Covers
Boilermaking sits at the heart of South Africa's industrial sector. From the petro-chemical plants along the Durban South Basin to fabrication yards in Pinetown and steel construction projects across KZN, trained boilermakers are in constant demand. This course gets you ready for that environment.
Core Fabrication and Metalwork Skills
The first part of the course focuses on reading and interpreting engineering drawings and basic fabrication layouts. You'll learn how to mark off, cut, and shape metal plate and structural sections using hand tools and mechanical equipment. These are the non-negotiables – the skills every boilermaker uses every single day on the job. You'll also cover welding fundamentals, which are closely tied to boilermaking in most workshop and site environments. Arc welding (stick welding) techniques are introduced so you understand how fabricated components are joined, even if you specialise in fitting and assembly rather than welding itself. Students who want to go deeper on welding can complement this training with our dedicated arc, CO2, or argon welding courses.
Fitting, Assembly, and Quality Checking
Once you've got the fabrication basics down, the course moves into fitting and assembly. This covers how components are aligned, bolted, and fitted together to correct tolerances. You'll learn to use measuring instruments correctly and understand what quality control looks like on a real job site or in a workshop. South African industry runs to strict quality and safety standards – SANS codes and OHS Act requirements affect every workshop environment. The course introduces these regulations so you understand what compliance means before you walk onto your first job.
Safety and Site Readiness
No responsible training provider sends students out without solid safety grounding. The course covers personal protective equipment, working safely with cutting equipment, safe handling of metal offcuts and scrap, and awareness of common workshop hazards. Students who need a full OHS certificate can add that as a separate short course – see our OHS training page for details.
Who This Training Is For
This course works well for a wide range of people. School leavers who want a practical trade rather than three years of studying theory. Workers already employed in factories or on construction sites who want formal recognition for skills they've picked up informally. Job seekers who need a certificate to get their foot through the door with a bigger employer.
It's also a useful stepping stone if you're already doing basic labouring on a construction or fabrication site and want to move into a skilled role. Completing this training opens doors to semi-skilled boilermaker positions, and from there the path to a fully qualified artisan is a realistic one.
You don't need prior metalworking experience to join. The course starts from the basics. What you do need is a willingness to work practically with your hands, follow safety instructions, and put in the effort during the 4-week programme.

Why Students Choose Abethu Skills in Durban
Over a decade of practical training
Abethu Skills has been running accredited courses from its Durban centre since before many of the newer training providers in KZN even opened. That experience shows in how the courses are structured and how trainers handle students who are at different levels.
Experienced, hands-on trainers.
The people who teach here have worked in industry. They're not reading from a manual – they know what fabrication supervisors actually look for, what mistakes cost people jobs, and what skills open doors. That real-world context comes through in every session.
Practical, not just theoretical.
The industry doesn't need people who can pass multiple-choice tests. It needs people who can mark off a plate accurately, cut to a line, and work safely. The course reflects that. Practical time is the priority.
Clear, transparent pricing.
The boilermaker course is R12,000 for 4 weeks. That's the price. No hidden admin fees, no surprise materials charges. What you see on the price list is what you pay. We accept cash, EFT, and can discuss payment arrangements with students who need it – call us to chat through your options.
Based in Durban, serving all of KZN.
Students come from across the province – Pietermaritzburg, Richards Bay, Tongaat, Empangeni – to complete their training here. The course structure is intensive enough to make the trip worthwhile, even if you need to arrange accommodation for the duration.
What is Basic Boilermaking?
Basic boilermaking is a specialized trade in structural engineering that involves the layout, cutting, shaping, and assembly of heavy metal plates and pipes. While a welder joins metals together, a boilermaker is responsible for the precision fabrication of the components themselves—transforming raw steel into complex structures like pressure vessels, storage tanks, and industrial boilers. The craft combines mathematical accuracy with heavy-duty metalworking to ensure that every part fits perfectly according to technical blueprints.
