Basic Computer Training in Pietermaritzburg — Get the Certificate Employers Are Looking For
If you're applying for admin roles, office positions, or any job that lists "computer literate" as a requirement — and computers still feel like unfamiliar territory — this course is built for you. Abethu Skills Development has been training learners across KwaZulu-Natal for over a decade, and our Basic Computer Training course is one of the most direct routes to making yourself more employable in today's job market.
The course runs for one month and covers everything from getting comfortable with a keyboard to working in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. You leave with a nationally recognised certificate and, more usefully, with the ability to actually do the tasks that employers need done. No prior experience is required.
What the Basic Computer Training Course Covers
Most entry-level office jobs assume you can manage a computer from day one. The problem is that “basic computer literacy” means different things to different people — some employers want you to type a proper letter; others need you to update a spreadsheet or send a professional email. This course makes sure you can do all of it.
Basic Computer Training builds the practical skills that fill that gap.
Working with Microsoft Word
You’ll start by getting comfortable with the interface, then move into real tasks: typing and formatting documents, creating reports, writing letters that look professional, and saving files where you can actually find them again. Many learners come in not knowing the difference between a document and a shortcut — by the end of month one, you’ll be producing work that looks the part.
Spreadsheets and Microsoft Excel
This is where most people feel uncertain, and understandably so. Excel can look intimidating. We break it down: entering data, basic calculations, understanding what cells and columns actually do, sorting information. If you’re eyeing a stores, logistics, or admin position, this section alone can separate your application from the pile.
Microsoft PowerPoint
Putting together a clear presentation — for a safety briefing, a team meeting, or a supervisor’s report — is a skill more employers expect than they used to. You’ll learn how to build slides that communicate clearly, without spending hours on formatting.
Email and Professional Communication
Writing emails that don’t read like a text message matters in an office environment. The course covers how to compose professional emails, attach documents correctly, and manage your inbox. You’ll also cover online communication etiquette that’s relevant whether you’re corresponding with a client or an internal team.
File Management and Internet Basics
Knowing how to create folders, organise documents, and find information online efficiently saves time and prevents the kind of mistakes that frustrate employers — like sending the wrong version of a file, or not being able to locate something when it’s needed urgently. We cover the practical habits that make you reliable at your desk.
Who This Course Is For
There isn’t a typical Abethu computer training student. The same course regularly has school leavers sitting alongside people in their forties who have spent their careers working with their hands and are now moving into supervisory or admin roles. Age isn’t a barrier. Neither is having zero experience.
That said, certain people tend to get the most immediate career benefit from this training:
- Job seekers who keep seeing “computer literate” on application forms and can’t honestly tick that box yet
- Construction and mining workers who are eyeing site admin, stores, or coordination positions — roles that have moved almost entirely to digital record-keeping and reporting
- Drivers who need to handle digital logbooks or complete online documentation
- School leavers with no formal work experience yet, who want something concrete on their CV
- Anyone changing careers into an office or customer-facing environment where computers are central to the day
If you can switch on a phone and use WhatsApp, you’re not starting from zero. The course is designed to build on what you already know and fill in the gaps that are holding your applications back.
Why Pietermaritzburg Learners Choose Abethu Skills
There are computer courses available in various formats, and some of them are very cheap for good reason. Here’s what makes the difference when you’re investing a month of your time.
Accredited training that carries weight with employers
Abethu Skills holds accreditation from a recognised SETA [client to confirm specific accreditation body and number — see checklist]. When you put this certificate on your CV, employers and HR departments recognise what it represents. An unaccredited certificate from a backroom course doesn't pass the same scrutiny, particularly in larger organisations where HR verifies credentials.
Instructors who get the anxiety
Not everyone finds computers intuitive. Abethu's computer training instructors have worked with complete beginners at every level — people who were genuinely worried they'd break something, or who felt too embarrassed to ask basic questions elsewhere. The classes are kept small enough that you won't get lost at the back, and you won't be moving on until what you've just done actually makes sense.
More than a decade of training across KZN
Abethu has been running accredited training programmes for over a decade, serving learners from Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Empangeni, and across the province. That track record matters when you're deciding who to trust with a month of your time and your training budget.
Practical, job-focused content
The curriculum isn't built around theory. It's built around what you'll actually be asked to do in an office. Every module has a real-world application — the kind of task you'd encounter in your first week at a new job. When you finish, you're not just familiar with the software; you know how to use it under pressure.
Clear pricing, no hidden extras
Abethu is upfront about what the course costs and what's included.
