Overhead Crane Training in Pietermaritzburg
Overhead cranes are a fixture in manufacturing plants, steel fabrication facilities, and engineering workshops across Pietermaritzburg. Operating one without formal training puts the operator, their colleagues, and the facility at legal risk. Abethu Skills provides TETA-aligned overhead crane operator training in PMB that meets the requirements of the OHS Act's Lifting Machinery Regulations.
What the Course Covers

- Load ratings, duty cycles, and safe working load (SWL) principles
- Pre-shift inspection: hooks, wire ropes, brakes, limit switches, and controls
- Slinging and load attachment — what the operator must verify before any lift
- Hand signals and radio communication with banks men
- Lifting Machinery Regulations under the OHS Act — what they require of operators and employers
Practical:
- Control familiarisation — pendant and cabin operation
- Travelling, hoisting, and precision load placement
- Tandem lifts and load stability management
- Emergency stop procedures and crane isolation
Who Needs This Training
Any person who operates an overhead crane in a South African workplace needs a certificate of competency. This applies to new operators, experienced operators formalising informal skills, and those due for certificate renewal. Employers are legally required to ensure their overhead crane operators are certified — a labour inspector or DoL audit will ask for those records.
