Scaffolding Training in Pietermaritzburg
Scaffolding failures cause serious injuries and fatalities on South African construction sites every year — and most of those failures trace back to inadequate training. If you're involved in erecting, inspecting, or dismantling scaffolding in Pietermaritzburg, Abethu Skills offers accredited scaffolding training that meets the legal requirements under the Construction Regulations and the OHS Act.
What the Scaffolding Course Covers
Theory:
- Scaffolding types — tube-and-coupler, system scaffold, suspended scaffolding
- Load capacity calculations and limits
- Scaffolding components — standards, ledgers, transoms, braces, and boards
- Ground conditions and base plate requirements
- Tie-in and anchor requirements for freestanding and facade scaffolding
- Inspection criteria — what makes a scaffold safe for use and what takes it out of service
- Construction Regulations requirements for scaffolding — permits, handover certificates, and inspection records
Practical:
- Erection of a scaffold structure to specification
- Inspection of an erected scaffold against safety criteria
- Identifying defects and taking appropriate action
- Safe dismantling and component handling
Scaffold Inspection vs Scaffold Erection
These are distinct competencies. A scaffold inspector must be able to verify that a structure erected by others is safe before workers use it. A scaffold erector must be able to build it correctly from the ground up. Both require training. We cover both in our PMB scaffolding programme — contact us to confirm which applies to your situation.

FAQs - Scaffolding Training Pietermaritzburg
Is scaffolding training required by law?
Yes. The Construction Regulations (under the OHS Act) require that scaffolding is only erected, altered, and dismantled by trained and competent persons.
Can I work on scaffolding without being a trained erector?
Workers who use scaffolding (but don’t erect it) must still be trained in basic scaffold safety and fall arrest techniques. The scaffold erection qualification is required for those who build and dismantle the structure.
Do you offer group scaffolding training for construction companies near PMB?
Yes. Group bookings for construction companies in uMgungundlovu District and the wider KZN region are available. Contact us to discuss project-aligned scheduling.
