Become a Certified LHD Scoop Training Pietermaritzburg

If you want to work underground on a mine and earn a wage operating heavy machinery, the LHD scoop is one of the surest routes in. Abethu Skills runs accredited Left Hand Scoop (LHD) training for learners across Pietermaritzburg and the wider KwaZulu-Natal Midlands — practical, hands-on instruction that ends with a nationally recognised operator certificate, not just a piece of paper.

We've been training operators for over a decade. Beginners welcome. Experienced operators needing a refresher, also welcome.

What LHD Scoop Training Actually Covers

A Left Hand Scoop — properly, a load-haul-dumper — is the machine that moves broken ore and waste rock through an underground mine. It’s a big, articulated, diesel-powered loader working in tight, low-light tunnels, and operating one safely is a skill mines pay for. Our course is built around Unit Standard 244476: Transfer broken rock by means of a diesel-powered load haul dumper (LHD) in an underground mine (NQF Level 2, 4 credits

Here's how the training breaks down by what you actually need

New operator training

This is the core of what we do. If you’ve never sat in an LHD cab, you start here. The course splits into classroom theory and supervised practical time on the machine. Theory covers the components and how they work — bucket, articulation joints, hydraulics, engine, cab controls — plus the safety protocols and warning systems you’re legally required to understand before you go underground. Then you’re on the machine, loading, hauling and dumping under an instructor’s eye until you can do it without thinking about it.

Assessment is weighted the way the job is: roughly 20% written, 80% practical. You’re competent when you can prove it on the machine, not when you’ve memorised a textbook.

Refresher and re-certification

LHD certificates don’t last forever. A refresher is required every two years, or sooner if an operator has been off the machine for a long stretch. If your licence is lapsing, or you’re coming back to the job after time away, the refresher gets you re-assessed and re-certified without sitting through the full beginner programme. It’s shorter, it’s focused, and it keeps you legally cleared to work.

Operators upskilling onto a second machine

Plenty of our learners already drive a forklift, TLB or front-end loader and want the LHD ticket to widen the jobs they can apply for. If that’s you, you’ll find the safety and inspection groundwork familiar — the new part is the machine itself and the underground environment it works in. Mines value operators who can run more than one plant, so adding LHD is rarely wasted.

How Pietermaritzburg Learners Train With Us

Abethu’s training centre is in Durban, about an hour down the N3 from Pietermaritzburg, and that’s where most public-intake training runs on real machines. For PMB-based employers booking a group, we can also arrange on-site assessment and training at your premises — useful when you’ve got several operators to certify and your own equipment for them to be assessed on. Whichever route fits, you’re talking to people who know KZN site conditions, not a national call centre reading off a script.

Getting started is simple. Call or email, tell us whether it’s one operator or a group, and we’ll check the next available intake dates, confirm what to bring, and lock in your booking.

Why LHD Scoop Pietermaritzburg Learners Train With Abethu Skills

Over ten years of operator training.

We've put thousands of South Africans through machine-operation and trade courses. That's a long time to refine how you teach someone to run heavy plant safely, and it shows in the practical time learners get.

We know the SA mining context.

LHD work sits under specific health-and-safety expectations for underground operations at NQF Level 1 and above. Our facilitators train to those standards because that's what mines on the ground actually require before they let you near a machine.

Experienced facilitators, real machine time.

Our instructors are people who've operated this plant, not classroom-only theorists. The 80% practical weighting isn't a marketing line — it's how the course is built.

Job support after you certify.

The mining sector employs a large share of South Africa's workforce, and qualified LHD operators are in genuinely short supply. We help learners with placement support once they've earned the certificate — getting trained is the point, but getting work is the goal.

Straight talk on price and process

You'll know what the course costs, how long it takes and what you walk away with before you commit. No surprise fees at the end.

Our Accreditations

CETA — Accreditation Number: 3P3812. Aligned to National Certificate: Construction: Plant Operations (Qualification ID: 65789, NQF Level 2). QCTO — Accreditation Number: 05-QCTOSDP010925142222. TETA — Aligned to TETA standards for plant and machinery training.

How the Course Works, Step by Step

There’s no mystery to getting started, and we keep the process simple on purpose.

Enquire and register

Call or message us about the next LHD intake. We'll explain the dates, the cost, the documents you need to bring and where training takes place. Registration is quick once you've decided.

Classroom theory.

You cover machine components, pre- and post-operation inspection, safety protocols and underground hazard awareness. This is where the written exam content lives. You'll need to attend and engage — there's no shortcut around the safety knowledge.

Supervised practical training.

You move onto the LHD itself and operate it under different conditions with an instructor giving feedback. This is the bulk of the course and where most of your assessment marks come from. You bring focus and willingness; we bring the machine and the guidance.

Assessment and moderation.

A qualified assessor judges you competent or not-yet-competent against the unit standard, and a moderator signs off. Practical performance carries the weight.

Certification.

Pass, and you receive your operator certificate. From there you can apply for LHD roles in mining, construction and quarrying.

Travelling From Pietermaritzburg

We train learners from across Pietermaritzburg and the KZN Midlands, and we also draw learners from Durban, Pinetown, Empangeni and surrounding towns. Because LHD training needs a machine and a proper training ground, practical sessions happen at our designated training site — when you enquire we’ll confirm exactly where your group trains and, if relevant, how PMB learners get there.

The certificate you earn is recognised nationally, so it travels with you to whichever province or mine you end up working in.

What LHD Training Costs

The full LHD scoop operator course is R7,000 for the 2-week course. That covers your theory instruction, supervised practical machine time, assessment, moderation and your certificate on successful completion.

A few things that affect what you pay: whether you’re doing the full beginner course or a shorter refresher, and whether you’re booking as an individual or as a group through an employer. Refresher and re-certification are priced lower than the full programme To get an exact figure for your situation, the fastest route is a quick call. We’ll confirm the current price, the next available dates and what you need to bring.

Book Your Front End Loader Training

A recognised loader certificate is the difference between sitting on a site waiting list and actually getting the work. Abethu has been certifying KZN operators for over a decade, the certificate holds up with employers and inspectors, and there are no surprises on the invoice.

LHD Scoop Training - Common Questions

Yes. The course is built on Unit Standard 244476 (NQF Level 2, 4 credits) for operating a diesel-powered load-haul-dumper underground. Your certificate is recognised across South Africa.

No. Most of our learners begin with no LHD experience at all. The course is designed to take a complete beginner through theory and supervised practical time to a competent, certified operator. Experienced operators can do a shorter refresher instead.

Abethu’s own listing puts the full LHD course at roughly two weeks, split between classroom theory and practical machine training. A refresher takes less time because you’ve already covered the groundwork.

Theory instruction, supervised practical operation on the machine, your assessment and moderation, and your operator certificate once you pass. Confirm the current figure with us when you book.

Yes — we train learners from PMB and right across the KZN Midlands. When you enquire we’ll confirm exactly where practical training takes place and how PMB learners get to the training ground.

LHD operators work in mining, construction and quarrying. Underground mines in particular need qualified scoop operators, and there’s a known shortage of certified people — which is good news for anyone holding the ticket.

Assessment is competency-based, so the focus is on getting you genuinely able to operate the machine safely. If you’re assessed not-yet-competent, talk to us about additional practical time before re-assessment.

Over a decade of operator training, experienced facilitators who’ve run the machines themselves, an 80% practical weighting, and placement support after you certify. We’d rather you leave able to do the job than just holding a certificate.
